The children’s ability to understand the play, the motives of the characters and the implications for what was to come was revealed when they were invited to make up a play that could be performed for Claudius: The teacher gave them the quote ‘to prick the conscience of the king’ as a title.

They had not yet met the actual play within a play (Act III, Scene ii) but each group made a play about the murder of a king or important person.

When each group shared their play the others were invited to go into role as the audience in the court of Elsinore, and the child playing Claudius took over the proceedings from the teacher, calling for quiet, and the groups bowed to him before performing.

During one group’s performance the child playing Claudius actually rushed out of the hall.

The children had anticipated the actual scene because of their understanding of the play and the characters.
